Exposure Of Urban Transit Space Potentials

In our densely networked city systems, mo­bility is an integral part in our cities and not imaginable without it in our daily life. Tran­sit spaces constitute a special kind of public spaces because they are used and shared by many people and commuters with the same short-term goal. These daily used intermediate places have an underestimated potential concerning their future function.
The aim of this thesis is to find out how the­se characteristics can be utilized and which interior design elements are needed to improve the quality of stay and to promote communication between people.
The metro station Charlottenplatz will be used as an example to show how making the systems visible and including the en­vironment can produce new functions and create an urban hub for encounter and communication.
It is a complex building that seems to have no orientation and direction concerning the construction. To find a starting point for the design it is of tremendous importance to analyse the exis­ting structure and bring out each frag­ment by decomposing the architectural ele­ments.

Jurybegründung: Der Entwurf zeigt eine U-Bahnstation ohne Nischen und Ecken einen Platz, der mit Weitläufigkeit und Transparenz eine Aufenthaltsqualität schafft. Darunter, daneben und darüber läuft der Verkehr. Die Aufgabe eines Platzes findet kurzerhand mit einer frischen Idee unter der Erde statt. Die völlig entkernte Ebene schafft Platz für ein Indoor-Market mit Aufenthaltsmöglichkeiten. Das modulare Shopsystem ist durchdacht und kann für unterschiedliche Verkaufsangebote einfach und individuell zusammengesetzt werden und dient auch für Aufenthaltsbereich. Die verglasten Nischen geben einen spannenden Ausblick auf den Verkehrsknotenpunkt und machen die Urbanität erlebbar. Die grafischen Elemente an Decke und Boden weisen auf die Ebenen des Platzes hin.
Das Material des Shopsystems ist schlicht gehalten und das Mosaik ist eine kleine Hommage an die 60ger Jahre des Charlottenplatzes.
